Children's Books - How to Keep Children Turning Those Pages

How should a children's book be constructed?

A very important element in the construction of a piece of creative writing is a strong beginning. If the opening is not catchy, then readers will fairly rapidly lose interest.

Children tend to have a short attention span and want to be quickly engrossed in a story.

This can be difficult for the author when they are introducing characters and storyline.

One option for a catchy opening could be a flash back paragraph which promises more exciting things to come.

I also find that opening with a conversation is quite a good maneuver.

You want to get the children turning pages. You do not want to lose them on the first page!

The body of the creative writing piece should intrigue and excite the reader.

Every chance to create drama should be seized. In fact, once you have written about an incident, go back over it several times, each time adding extra drama. If you are writing a fantasy children's book for example, anything goes, so dig deep into your imagination and bring out the most fantastic thing you can think of. The idea is to excite and intrigue. Drama involves conflict to make people care about your characters and your story.

Lead up to dramatic and suspenseful situations with care. The right mood has to be created and the timing has to be spot on. The reader wants to be tantalized, but not bored. The priming of the reader for the dramatic event makes the event even more exciting. Afterwards there should be a lull in the pace as the story moves towards the next dramatic development. All the time there should be a promise of more exciting things to come.

For more exciting creative writing, put in a variety of moods.

Children respond very well to humor. Humor in the right place can relieve tension and make a character more likeable. Of course, care should be taken with the use of humor (unless you are actually wanting to confront the reader) to ensure it is not inappropriate.

Sad situations have their place in a children's book too. However, sadness should be followed by something positive and optimistic - a lesson has been learnt and/or the characters have had some sort of spiritual awakening. Both the characters in the story and the reader can smile once again.

Your children's book concludes when all the loose ends have been tied up. Read the story through several times to make sure that nothing remains that is unexplained.

The ending should be strong and leave the reader satisfied. The reader should be wondering about the lives of the characters and hopefully wanting to meet them again. That of course, gives you the opportunity for the sequel!

Saitek P990 Dual Analog Game Pad

Saitek P990 Dual Analog Game Pad
Instantly configure your pad's controls to the perfect set-up for First Person Shooter games with a single button press. The ergonomic controls with soft touch handles increase grip and comfort during hours of gameplay. Advanced programming is provided by Saitek Smart Technology (SST) software. System Requirement: Windows XP & XP64

Customer Review: Not as good as the last one, but...

I bought this controller to replace my old Saitek P880, the previous iteration of this controller, which finally gave out on me after four years of abuse.

For the most part this is still a good, solid controller, except for one factor - The D-pad, compared to the one on my P880, feels incredibly cheap and sometimes sticks, and did so right out of the box. The feel of the other buttons is similar or identical, but the D-pad is rather annoying for games I use it in when it triggers. Mind you, it's maybe one time out of a hundred and fifty or so, but still annoying when it happens.

For the record, I use the controller for the games Phantasy Star Universe and Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst, which are both third-person action games, and the d-pad is used only for menus. For what it's worth, if you play Phantasy Star Universe, this is the only controller I've found that actually has enough buttons for all the functions you can map to a controller, finally removing my need to still use the keyboard for certain things.

If you like controllers with six face buttons rather than the four-button layout that seems to be more common, this is a good one to get, just mind that there can be issues with the D-pad. If your game doesn't use the D-pad, then there isn't a problem I can think of.

Customer Review: Solid control but poor programming software

Overall i am pleased with this gamepad. It works great as long as the game itself has a good control setup of its own as i found the downloadable programming software to be somewhat frustrating. it really isn't very user friendly or pretty(just a minor grip). for some reason assigned buttons just randomly won't do what they are supposed to and have to be reassigned and then still might not work. it shouldn't be difficult or take this much effort to program a controller. however once setup it is very nice.

The Age of Miracles: Embracing the New Midlife

The Age of Miracles: Embracing the New Midlife

The need for change as we get older—an emotional pressure for one phase of our lives to transition into another—is a human phenomenon, neither male nor female. There simply comes a time in our lives—not fundamentally different from the way puberty separates childhood from adulthood—when it’s time for one part of ourselves to die and for something new to be born.
The purpose of this book by best-selling author and lecturer Marianne Williamson is to psychologically and spiritually reframe this transition so that it leads to a wonderful sense of joy and awakening.
In our ability to rethink our lives lies our greatest power to change them. What we have called “middle age” need not be seen as a turning point toward death. It can be viewed as a magical turning point toward life as we’ve never known it, if we allow ourselves the power of an independent imagination—thought-forms that don’t flow in a perfunctory manner from ancient assumptions merely handed down to us, but rather flower into new archetypal images of a humanity just getting started at 45 or 50.
What we’ve learned by that time, from both our failures as well as our successes, tends to have humbled us into purity. When we were young, we had energy but we were clueless about what to do with it. Today, we have less energy, perhaps, but we have far more understanding of what each breath of life is for. And now at last, we have a destiny to fulfill—not a destiny of a life that’s simply over, but rather a destiny of a life that is finally truly lived.
Midlife is not a crisis; it’s a time of rebirth. It’s not a time to accept your death; it’s a time to accept your life—and to finally, truly live it, as you and you alone know deep in your heart it was meant to be lived.

Customer Review: The Best is Yet to Come

I have long respected the writing of Marianne Williamson. Her latest book was the most comfortable of everything I have read of hers.

I like books that stretch my thinking. This book did not really do that for me. But, what it did so beautifully was to soothingly add some context to the journey of life. I thoroughly enjoyed both the book and the author's reading of the book on audio tape.

Anyone racing through life and wondering about the meaning of life will enjoy the author's perspective and her sharing of personal vignettes that illustrate her point that our best years can be in front of us. This book has a wonderful sense of peace and hope.

Tired of self help books written from gurus preaching at you from on high? This book is a refreshing contrast to that model. The author shares her wisdom with a clear sense that she too is on a journey to understand this thing we call life. She does so in a manner that has the reader feeling, at least for the moment (and hopefully longer) that life is like a beautiful flower unfolding and reaching toward the heavens.

Well done, Marianne. And to think that your best is yet to come.

Customer Review: Fantastic !!

This book is the best book I've read on 'self' or improving self in my entire life. I was amazed at what I was reading. Marianne Williamson wrote exactly what I have been feeling and thinking for about seven years. I am now 49 years old... and I just am so thankful to read this book. Read it, it has so much to say, and every page is packed with unbelievable information and it is all true, at least for me it is. It's an amazing help for entering this age... "Of Miracles!"

Comanche Moon

Comanche Moon
Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae pursue three outlaws, Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump, Comanche horse thief Kicking Wolf and a Mexican bandit king. Now in their middle years, they also struggle with their personal lives, Gus with Clara Forsythe, the love of his life, and Call with Maggie Tilton, the young prostitute who loves him. Meanwhile their partners-in-arms Deets, Jake Spoon and Pea Eye Parker help the Rangers protect the advancing western frontier from the defiant Comanches who are determined to defend their land and way of life. Prequel to Lonesome Dove, and based upon the novel by Larry McMurty.

Customer Review: A Bad western movie!

The acting and dialogue are bad. The file is slow and boring. The are no "fighting scenes" in the whole movies. What I mean is that in all those scenes, only one side was shooting at the other for a couple of minutes. Then it ended.

Save your money on this.

Customer Review: Excellent

If you love the Lonesome Dove series from Dead Man's Walk, Lonesome Dove, "Return to Lonesome Dove," and Streets of Laredo and then Lonsome Dove the series and The Outlaw years. Then your going to love Comance Moon. Now all we need is a better

Closure to Newt's life as a final chapter. If you don't understand this, start to watch from the biggining to the missing end.

Just about any Weber carb is in this book, plus Zenith Strombergs and SU carburetors ... with four or five pages dedicated to each. In other words, a mile wide and an inch deep. But where else can you find this much information between two covers? Just a shame it's published on newsprint paper...

40 Years of the X-Men
With 40 Years Of X-Men DVD, you've got a full collection of every X-Men story published in the last four decades. Almost 500 issues of the classic X-Men comics are reproduced here, from the very first issue in 1963 to August 2005 -- all in full color, from cover to cover. Explore a world where a small group of people are born with genes that give them super-powers. These "mutants" are hated and feared by humanity at large, and the X-Men come together to protect both mutants and human from prejudice and evil mutants alike. You'll get to follow their incredible adventures as they span four amazing decades.

Customer Review: A perfect gift for the comic book fan who has almost everything

My husband loved this as a gift. He is a long-time comic book fan and this gave him an opportunity to read some of the very first editions that are way before his time. They look amazing on the computer, plus you can print if you want. (with 15,000+ pages I can't imagine why you'd want to) I was concerned about Mac compatibility, but since the thing is just a PDF interface, you just need Acrobat, no special Windows-only software. We're looking to pick up the Spiderman collection next.

Customer Review: Nice read

It is just as it says. A pdf scan of all comics. It's really neat to read some of these again. Great value and good entertainment.
