Audible Books: The Evolution of Story Telling
In the days of old, stories were usually told orally from a tribal storyteller or one of the wise elders or chiefs. The next progression in storytelling came with the first hieroglyphics and visual representations of actual and mythical events. After that came the evolution of written languages and alphabets, eventually culminating in the printing press that appeared only a few hundred years ago. Books have become the main medium for people to tell both tales of fiction and reality and they literally (no pun intended) have taken over the world. Millions and millions of books have been written, read, stuck in huge libraries, worshipped, banned, censored, and even burnt because of their perceived potential and powerful effects on societies. The previous century saw the advent of film that brought 'life' to many books and subsequently have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment in our world. Now however, with the Information Age have come E books, and a very exciting new arrival: audible books. Audible books have ensured that books will still be one of the main storytelling mediums for generations to come.
The Internet has brought so many new ways for us to communicate with each other, but here I will focus mainly on the area of literature. If you aren't good at typing, or have some kind of illness that prevents bodily movement, there are now voice recognition software packages that turn your voice into words on the monitor and thus the sheet of paper. On the other hand, there is now technology that uses voice synthesis to convert text into spoken audio for audio books.
Recently I went on a trip by car with my parents for the first time in many years as I had the opportunity to get to visit my girlfriend as she lives in the same city as they were visiting. The reason why I haven't travelled with them for so long is that our personalities often clash and in a confined space over a length of time it can become unbearable for all those involved. I was still a little dubious of the trip ahead but my Dad said that he had an audible book that we could listen to on the way through his Apple Ipod. He has a connection called Itrip that you connect from the music device to the cigarette lighter and then the book is heard through any unused radio frequency. This particular story was meant to be a science fiction novel called 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card. I hadn't read Sci-Fi in a long time so I wasn't really looking forward to it, but my Dad assured me that his friend had told him that it was very good.
Well, let me tell you the story was very engrossing indeed. All three of us were hanging on every word from the multiple narrators (an interesting way to hear a story told) that meant that we couldn't even discuss our opinions on what we thought was happening (the story wasn't very straightforward) until we made it to food, gasoline, and rest stops. This meant none of the arguments of old as well as friendly conversation when communication was possible. The coolest part of all was how the time of the journey just seemed to flow by. Usually the eight hour (each way) trip could be quite tiring with one becoming impatient at the monotony of the landscape; farms and pastures can become one huge blur after a while. This time however, story unfolding gradually mile after mile, the climax of the plot building slowly, we almost didn't want the trip to end as it would mean the end of the storytelling experience.
This could have great ramifications for the humans of the future, don't you think? Imagine what it could mean for keeping children happy, calm, and even the added educational opportunities. There are many places to find audible books but the most famous is www.audible.com. There are thousands of texts there separated by genre as well as having 'book club' and 'award winning' lists. They cost money of course, but if you become a member you receive discounts that mean that most are no more expensive than paper books. A lot of the classics are there as well as children's books and recently published texts. There are probably a hundred different genre categories and sub-categories altogether. If you've got a book of your own that you want to turn into an audible, check out www.nextup.com.
Maybe you've never been much of a reader but you've always enjoyed it when people have weaved magical tales that cause you to fly away to other realms and realities. For whatever reason, go check out audible books, they may just open another door of perception.

Customer Review: Baby Homer Simpson? DVDs not for babies even if "Einstein" is in the name...
The name "Brainy Baby" is a nice way to lull parents into feeling okay about their babies watching t.v. and videos, but according to the American Academy of Pediatrics babies should not be exposed to television at all before they're 2 years old! According to Time Magazine and the Boston Globe,
".. researchers found that, among babies ages 8 months to 16 months, every hour spent daily watching programs such as 'Brainy Baby' or 'Baby Einstein' translated into six to eight fewer words in their vocabularies as compared with other children their age."
Another study shows that brain wave activity in babies is actually slower when watching television than when *sleeping*, and yet another study shows that for every hour of television a baby watches a day, their chances of having an attention deficit disorder increases 10%. (I.e. 5 hours a day = 50% greater chance of ADHD). I like to take William Sears' advice that "relationships, not things, make babies smarter". The easiest way to make babies smarter? Carry them in a sling, because it is proven to make them much smarter since they are relating to you physically, emotionally, verbally, and visually.

Customer Review: I-Sight, I like!!
I always find it amusing that some folks seem to have difficulty with operating something rather simple. Much like the people shown in an advertisement having difficulty (on purpose) with a simple task and then shown with the 'solution' product that they are pitching.
We spend a lot of time RVing with a dog which requires spending time outdoors, many times in the dark. This little light is perfect since it frees up your hands to handle the doggy chores. But it also is enough light on a dark night to allow you to get around while seeing everywhere your head is pointed.
It feels awkward at first, until you get the hang of it. Put it on your ear, adjusting it and pushing it against your head, until it feels snug. Mine has yet to fall off or even come close to falling off.
I've used 'head lights' that strap around your head like a visor. And I've used other types of illuminating devices, but this is now my favorite.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day [Blu-ray]
After he pushed the envelope of computer-generated special effects in The Abyss, director James Cameron turned this hotly anticipated sequel to Terminator into a well-written, action-packed showcase for advanced special effects and for one of the most invincible villains ever imagined. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a legitimate sequel: there's more story to tell about a hulking, leather-clad android (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader (Edward Furlong) from being killed by the tenacious T-1000 robot (Robert Patrick), whose liquid-metal construction makes him seemingly unstoppable. The fate of the future lies in the balance, with Linda Hamilton (who would later marry her director) reprising her role as the rugged woman whose son will change the course of history. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Review: Fantastic, my first choice as a gift
This is a fantastic set! The favorite disc of the three is "The Book of Pooh," although the Mickey Mouse one is a close second. The activities are really fun, with great graphics and classic pooh-character humor and scripts. It was my daughter's first software at three, and now as a first grader she still loves it. My three-year-old son was able to teach himself the games and how to navigate the menus. He plays with it without needing any help. We loved it so much we give it to friends with toddlers, and when one of our discs was broken, we bought the whole set of three again.

Customer Review: Fielder's Choice in scorecard books!
This is the best scorecard book we have found to use for baseball games and is the ONLY one my husband will use. Our original local supplier went out of business and we were thrilled that we found the same product, for a reasonable price, here on Amazon. If you have a basball fanatic in your household, as I do, this is a great way to allow them to keep stats & info on multiple games in a single scorebook. I highly recommend this scorecard book for the baseball fan in your life!
Customer Review: this is the best book
This is by far the best scorebook for baseball. I have tried others over the years and this is the best. Sure if your in a league that has more than 9 batters ( not true baseball) or leagues that ar emore flexible than this is not the book for you, however this book if completed properly can give you an exact recount of the game as it unfolds. It does also have 12 inning, while most other books offer only 10 or 9 innings. This can tend to be a problem if you bat around the order more than 1 time. You would then have to go to a different page and that is a huge pain.

Audible Books: The Evolution of Story Telling
In the days of old, stories were usually told orally from a tribal storyteller or one of the wise elders or chiefs.
