Laptops, Notebooks and Portable Computers: Making the Choice

With the current portable computing market being very strong and offering hundreds of choices from full laptops, to portable media stations, to ultra-portable PCs, to smart phones and PDAs, you really need to know what you're looking for prior to going out to purchase.

The current popular classifications of portable "smart" electronics allows everything to fall in to one or more of six categories: full laptop, thin-and-light laptop, UMPC, tablet PC, smart phone, or PDA.

Full laptops are the style notebook you're used to, they range in size and weight, but are generally much heavier and bulkier than the other options. They're also significantly more powerful, however, at a much higher power draw - which usually results in battery life of circa-four hours. Some laptops have dedicated graphics processors, however, most in the consumer price range do not - thus, gaming on laptops can be difficult and pricey.

The new "thin-and-light" style notebooks have caught on dramatically in the last few years. With the majority of the same features of the full laptopns, thin-and-lights usually sport 13- or 14-inch screens, light weight, and many energy conserving features to optimize battery life. These laptops also will not work well for gaming, but for business and web related work, will work amazingly.

UMPCs are a recent release from Microsoft, although, previously released as handtops - the handtops category quickly died out. UMPCs are usually small enough to fit in one hand, sport a variety of styles, usually a QWERTY keyboard, Windows XP or Tablet Edition operating system, low specifications, and generally low battery life. The most prominent UMPC on today's market is the OQO. These are usually very pricey, and the small screens make them rather unattractive for gaming.

Tablet PCs are an old invention, and usually look a lot like a piece of thick paper. The screens are touch sensitive, and the mouse is usually controlled with a stylus, rather than a mouse or touchpad. Specifications and battery life is frequently lower than usual in these, and prices are usually substantially higher. They are much smaller than full laptops, though much bigger than UMPCs.

Smart phones and PDAs are frequently classed together, since the main difference is the ability to connect to a PST (public switched telephone) network. PDAs are personal digital assistants, and usually don't feature a full operating system past simple functionality such as address book, calendar, and notetaking.

Scooby-Doo Figure 5-Pack

Scooby-Doo Figure 5-Pack
This complete 5-pack of figures includes the entire Mystery Inc. gang with Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne. Each posable figure is 5" tall and has oversized features for little hands.

Customer Review: Great for 4 year old

My son got these for Christmas (along with the Mystery Machine). He loves them and I find in the kitchen on the tile constantly playing with them. He piles them in the van and solves mysterys alone with his Scooby videos. I can already see an increase in his role playing skills!

Customer Review: BUYERS BEWARE

We bought these for our 3 year old son for Christmas. It has been a month since then and our son loves them, but there is a BIG problem. The paint on them all had been steadily falling off. Freddy now has only patches of paint on his arms, and Daphne has only a spot of paint left on her head. With the recent issues involving Chinese made toys, I decided to throw them all out this morning. The toys are great as long as you don't mind you children ingesting the paint from them. If you do buy them, check them constantly for signs of deterioration. But, I would highly discourage this purchase.

Customer Review: Wipeout Pure........

Let's be honest here, my favorite futuristic racers has always been Extreme-G, & Jet Moto. Don't ask me why, they've just always held a closer place in my heart than other racers of this sort. Well, I decided to get Wipeout Pure because I was jonesing for a racing game(since EA hadn't put out anything recently to get me excited about) and the price was just right for me(look at the price, it's cheap). The only other Wipeout game I've ever played was Wipeout XL on the PS1 and, sad to say, it never did anything for me. Man, imagine my surprise when I boot up the game and almost, from the get-go, I'm absorbed into the game. The sense of speed is blistering. The presentation to actual gameplay and whatnot is simply astonishing. I've only got a short list of PSP games I can actually say that about. Anyhow, this game was such a blast to play that I'm seriously thinking about getting its' followup, Wipeout Pulse.

The only thing I saw at fault in the game was an inconsistant framerate, at times. Course, games of this nature have always had this problem(especially my beloved Extreme-G series). It's nothing that hampers the game, only the pickiest will find it a gripe.

Since the PSP has neither a PSP version of Extreme-G or Jet Moto(one can always wish for them, eh?); the closest thing I've got is Wipeout Pure and, believe me, I'm glad it is there.

For this to be a 2005 PSP launch title, it still holds up today. Wipeout Pure is a deep & rewarding game. Definitely a must-have for racing fans.

Customer Review: Almost perfect! 9.5/10

I've played a couple of the previous versions of WipeOut and have always been impressed by this series, but the latest version for PSP is exceptional!

The handling of the car is terrific; you can use the D-pad or analog stick for subtle taps, and the shoulder triggers work airbrakes for harder, tighter steering.

The graphics look beautiful, almost jewel-like, and the selection of music works well with this face-paced game.

You know a racing game is great when you find yourself leaning your body left and right as you swoop through the curves.

The only caveat I've found is that apparently there are online downloads (extra courses, cars, etc.) available at the developer's web-site, but when I try on numerous occasions to download it times out. I suspect it's because the downloads are only available to certain countries, and my country is not one.

All in all, I rate WipeOut Pure a 9.5 out of 10. Fantastic!
