Choose the Right Format for Your Ebooks

Choose the Right Format for Your Ebooks

 by: Tim Coulter

Choosing the right file format for your ebook is an essential step on the road to electronic self-publishing. This article looks at the factors affecting your choice and offers tips to help you make the most of your ebook, whatever format you choose.

The format of an ebook determines the nature of the digital package in which it is distributed. During the short history of the ebook, various new formats have been developed and others may evolve in the future. But, as with any maturing technology, a point will probably be reached where one or two formats dominate, to the exclusion of all others. Fortunately, it is becoming increasingly easy to re-package existing content in alternative formats, so there is now less risk associated with making an early commitment to a particular format, even if it ultimately fails the test of time.

The important considerations when choosing an ebook format are:

  • Compatibility with the platform used by the target audience

  • Ease of installation and use by your readers

  • The ability to support any special features required by the intended content

All common ebook formats now support flexible text formatting and page layout, embedded graphics, hyperlinks and convenient navigation.

The two formats most commonly used by independent ebook authors are PDF and HTML (also known as EXE format). They are favored for their ease of creation and widespread acceptance by the ebook community. Although other formats exist (MS Reader, Adobe ebook and Palm Doc etc), they typically entail more complex compilation procedures and include features more applicable to mass publishing.

The PDF format, developed by Adobe Systems Inc, can be viewed on Windows and Unix systems, as well Macs and even handheld computers. An ebook in PDF format is viewed using the free, downloadable Adobe Reader software.

Although a specific version of the Adobe Reader application is required by each target platform, a single common PDF file format is applicable to all users, regardless of their platform. This cross-platform compatibility is probably the single most important factor in the huge popularity of PDF as a publishing format. Over 500 million computer users are currently equipped to read PDF documents.

A PDF ebook can contain thousands of pages and the inbuilt hierarchical navigation system (known as bookmarks) makes it as easy to find a particular chapter or page as in a printed book. For this and other reasons, the PDF format is generally the professional's choice.

HTML ebooks are created by combining a set of HTML pages (i.e. web pages) into a single file. The resultant ebook can only be viewed on Windows computers, but since the majority of buyers fall in this group, most marketers do not consider this a major limitation. Unlike PDF (and other formats), HTML ebooks do not require any additional pre-installed software to read them. Most variants are dependent on Internet Explorer, but since this is installed automatically with Windows, the issue is of no consequence to most users.

A common feature of many HTML ebooks is the ability to customize certain pre-defined aspects of their content, even after creation and distribution. This is known as re-branding. It is very popular among online marketers, particular those producing promotional ebooks, because it enables the ebook medium to be used as a viral affiliate marketing tool.

On the downside, the need for multiple content files means that HTML ebooks are more cumbersome to create, making the format less well-suited to large authoring projects. Also, since HTML ebooks are directly executable by Windows, they are a potential source of computer viruses. Although there have been few incidents of virus problems originating from the ebook industry, the ever-present threat means that some prospective readers are wary of downloading ebooks in this format.

Customer Review: The best out there, but has flaws

If there ever was a Haynes guide for a vehicle I own, I got it! I have seen the others from factory shop manuals, Chilton's, etc and they just don't match up.

I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab. There are two years before me and one year after me. I feel that the revisions to later model years isn't handled very well. I don't think that it justifies an entire separate manual, but it would be better if alternate diagrams/instructions were there for the later years.

In all, it didn't keep me from getting the jobs done. I would still get this manual over all others for this truck.

Magic

Magic
Magic, Bruce Springsteen's new studio recording and his first with the E Street Band in five years, is set for release by Columbia records on October 2, 2007. Produced and mixed by Brendan O'Brien, the album features eleven new Springsteen songs and was recorded at southern tracks recording studio in Atlanta, Ga.

Customer Review: Not the old Springsteen "magic"

I have been a Bruce Springsteen fan for more than 20 years and own most of his music. I saw him in 1985 during the Born in the USA tour and consider that show to be the best live concert I've ever attended.

I pre-ordered Magic based on comments by Springsteen's manager that this album echoed the Boss's work of the 1970's. Having listened through the album several times, I do not agree with that assessment. I agree with many others that some of the lyrics are hard to understand. For a person like Springsteen who has something to say about life in our times, I think the words matter. Many of the songs aim for the good-time feel of some of Springsteen's earlier work with the obligatory Clarence Clemon's solos and fine keyboard work by Roy Bittan, but they don't have much to say.

The highlights for me are the buoyant "Livin' in the Future" and the wry cover song "Magic," both subtle damnations of the policies of the "Current Occupant." I admire Springsteen for putting his reputation and career on the line to say what needs to be said in this day and age of people who will crucify you for speaking against those currently in power. But he should have made sure the final mix of the songs put those words out front.

I wanted to like this album. Despite repeated listens, I can't get very excited about it as a whole, although I do really like a couple of the songs.

Customer Review: Magic

Bruce Springsteen & The E. Street Band-Magic *****

When you get right down to it, the bare basic rock n' roll, strip all the country leanings, the ol' dixie influence of albums past, the self-indulgent pop that went against everything you set out to do, and you have Magic, Springsteens most honest and true to form albums in years. Magic might be the very best album Springsteen ever released, rivaling that of even U.S.A., Darkness On The Edge Of Town, and even the legendary Born To Run. While it might not be as theme concious as those albums it does do something remarkable. Magic is a career spanning album, it has something from all that fasits of his career. Lour Arena rockers, Politicaly charged anthems, country hinged melodys, Bob Dylan meets Jack Kerouack lyrics, and a backing of one of Americas greatest rock bands, The E. Street Band.

Opening with one of their all time greatest songs, 'Radio Nowhere' comes across as a plea by way of a neutron bomb. Homming some of his best lyrics and some of the E. Street Bands best grooves. 'You'll Be Coming Down' is what they wish they would have accomplished with The Rising.'Livin' In The Future' would have fit perfectly with The River, and gives vision to what everyone wishes they could say sometimes, "We're living in the future, and none of this has happened yet." 'Girls In Their Summer Clothes' is one of the best songs the band has ever recorded reminding us of early Springsteen. 'Last To Die' is easily the best anti-war-in-Iraq song to ever come along. While the 'Long Walk Home' may just be the best to come along in the last ten years from anyone, one that truly has to be heard to fully appreciate.

Magic is the album we have all been waiting for, one that we almost got with The Rising, but just came up short. Magic is easily the best Springsteen album since U.S.A., and maybe of their entire career.

Customer Review: Great guide and is in-depth

If you're like me, then you like Dan Birlew and the BradyGAMES Signature Series guides. These guides are very in-depth and after the Devil May Cry guide got this off to a great start, the Onimusha 2 guide keeps it going. I'll give you tons of reason why this is the best Strategy Guide (in my opinion) then any other Onimusha guide out there.

First of all, like any guide (or hopefully any guide), there is the walkthrough. This walkthrough is very in-depth with ultra detailed maps that pin-point every item! The walkthough is precise and quite possibly one of the most in-depth organized walkthrough from BradyGAMES to date. The author does a great job explaining the strategies, and talks about the better approach for Offensive and defensive battle tatics against bosses.

The game basics section is for me especially. If you don't feel you get enough explanation on attacks etc. from the instruction booklet (like me) then the game basics section does a great job on explaining just how to get critical hits, when is best to attack and when its best to just haul you butt out of there.

There is also a list included for trading items. The only gripe I have with this list (and the guide) is that this trading list isn't in alphabetical order, meaning you'll be reading up and down the list just to find if the item is worth trading to another. But they do explain how to trade and tell you what you'll get too!

The alliances to form are listed in the back of the book in a flowchart. This shows you just what path to take! But it also explains just how you should form alliances as well. They tell you what the benefits are as well.

The secrets and sidequests and telling you how to use each character (combos and everything are explained). The side quest are brillantly outlined and easy to use. They tell you who gets what too. The secrets also explain a lot about the different difficulty levels and the Man in Black mini game.

Lastly, the guide completely covers the Oni mini game with a tear out wall scroll to go along with it. This is a great guide and if you're going to get Onimusha 2 then you should definitely get this book!

On the Positive side:
+Great Maps!
+Great Strategies!
+Crystal Clear screens with helpful captions
+Hey! Its Signature series
+Tricks of Trade revealed
+Side Quests explained
+Both mini-games explained
+Game Basics actually help you learn the game better then the manual.
+Interview with Keiji Inafune!

But on the downside
-The trading items list is out of order
-Some boss strategies are a little too focused on defense

Customer Review: Pretty much useless

I think I must have read at least 3 of the books in a set (spend a chunk of my Caribbean vacation on reading those). I read very thouroughly but when it came to taking a practice test from Testking.com, I could not answer any sample questions at all. Also when reading the questions and trying to find an answer using one of the books in this set, I couldn't because a lot of important concepts are simply not there (for example Web Farms).

The first exam I took was 70-305. I passed it the first time with a pretty high score. The book I used to pass and highly recommend is MCAD/MCSD Training Guide (70-305): Developing and Implementing Web Applications with Visual Basic.NET and Visual Studio.NET (Training Guide) by Mike Gunderloy. You can get a used one for under $20. It's worth every cent. Also I would like to recommentd to pair it up with sample questions from Testking.com.
