Audio Books - 10 Frequently Asked Questions - Part 1

My friends and colleagues consider me as the audio books expert. They tell their friends that they know an audio books expert and the outcome is that I keep getting dozens of audio books questions and inquiries each day. I have decided to gather the most frequently asked questions for everyone's benefit.

Here are the top five frequently asked questions about audio books (and the answers of course):

1. Are there free audio books? How do I get them?
In one word: NO. In two words: Not exactly. Depends of the type of audio book you are looking for (downloadable audio book are cheaper than the other types), and the audio book title (new audio books cost more), you could find low cost audio books.

I believe that one should pay for each product or service he gets. Yet, you could find free audio books mostly by signing up for the free trials most of the online audio book services give you.

2. What is better - Audio books rental or audio books buying?
I personally prefer audio books rental. Mostly because of the price - I read a lot of audio books and it will simply cost too much to buy them all. However, audio books that I really like, Ones that I want to listen to time after time, I buy and keep them on my audio books library.

Yet, I have friends who are more possessive - they are not willing to rent audio books and they must hold a remarkable huge audio book library.

3. What do you suggest - downloadable audio books, audio books on CD or books on tape?
Well, that's a tough question. Basically, I believe that the most worthy audio books format nowadays is downloadable audio books. You must own a media player (e.g. Ipod) to listen to it. Yet, it costs less than the others and has a better quality.

However, the widest collection of audio books could be found on the audio books on CD format. If you want to listen to old books you will find them only on CDs.

I do not recommend getting books on tape (also known as audio books on cassettes). They are expensive, low quality and not user friendly.

4. When can I read audio books?
The answer is - Anytime and anywhere. Here are a few examples: While cooking, cleaning the house, exercising, running, walking, driving, flying, before going to sleep, commuting, working etc.

5. Are audio books expensive?
Audio books are not expensive at all. In fact, Downloadable audio books are very cheap - they cost much less than real books and renting them is the most worthy deal. Audio books on CD cost about the same as real books and books on tape are the most expensive ones.

Hercules

Hercules
Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't fly), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton

Customer Review: Love It!

I'm nineteen years old... and I STILL love Disney, this movie especially. Historical re-tellings are the best Disney movies. They provide a bit of culture to the audience, whom are usually children. It's a great way to sneak education into their entertainment. While the history isn't always exactly accurate, or the re-telling of the myth... it still has value. Ignore the poo-pooing of the accuracy and animation buffs. IT'S A CARTOON. For entertainment! Lighten up, folks. Hercules gives us the buildings-roman part of the story and is obviously the main focus... but really, the other characters are the best. Meg is wise-cracking and street-smart, Hades is smooth-talking and evil, Phil is a crabby yet lovable mentor, the Muses are sexy and snappy, and the Fates and that eyeball are way too cool. This movie is a bit gorey and I wouldn't recommend it for young-young children, older ones would probably get a kick out it. This movie is a bit gorey and I wouldn't recommend it for young-young children, but the older ones would probably get a kick out it.

Customer Review: Not suitable for younger children

As was pointed out in a recent Journal of the American Medical Association some G rated films are entirely too violent. This is one of them. It is not suitable for younger children at all. There are complicated themes of Hades (Hell), evil, and about one quarter of it is pure violence. On top of all of that it is not even good. It's clunky, and lacks a truely engaging story. Some of the voices in the film are wickedly annoying, though I thought James Woods wasn't bad.

Quickbooks Standard Payroll 2008

Quickbooks Standard Payroll 2008
An easy-to-use solution for doing your payroll essentials, in-house! Use up-to-date tax tables and automatic calculations to efficiently run your payroll directly from within QuickBooks-use your existing QuickBooks software or the included QuickBooks Simple Start CD. Standard Payroll is designed for small business owners who want to automate the payroll process, but don't need to file state payroll taxes or track more advanced calculations.

Customer Review: keeps me current

I figure just one error in payroll calculations and I would spend more than the cost of this software. I have used it for a couple years now and love that it updates and does things for me. I only wish this or the QB would allow doing gross checks and then calculate the taxes. To do that I have to buy a different version of QB. Not worth the extra money for the few checks I write. But for payroll calcs it is a good thing to have.

Customer Review: Don't pay full price of $199.95!

Payroll is available for half price if you shop around. I don't mind supporting Intuit's greed at $99 a year - a business with 2 employees shouldn't have to pay the same price as one with 50 employess!

Wilton Cupcake Fun Book

Wilton Cupcake Fun Book

It contains an extensive collection of projects and recipes featuring step-by-step decorating instructions, along with a delicious assortment of recipes for these individual treats, including fillings and icings for special occasions and holidays as well as day-to-day treats. Patterns are included in the book for creative cupcakes as well as a complete product listing from Wilton to complete your designs. Softcover, 8-1/4 x 10-3/4 with beautiful photographs.

Customer Review: we love this cupcake book

My husband and I love this cupcake book so much that we have bought it numerous time to give to our grown up children so that they can have the fun of making spectacularly whimsical cupcakes for their friends and children. The recipes for muffins and cakes are great. Every year wilton updates the creative aspects of a cake form and this one is just spectacular. The designs are doable by those with almost no coordination or cake decorating experience. The key is always to make your own frosting so it is thick enought to hold shapes, or add a LOT of powdered sugar to commercial frostings to thicken them. Anyway, there are literally 150 full color cupcakes. There are your hilarious farm animals, awesome swimmers for whom the cupcakes are inflatable innertubes, wedding cupcakes, floral, clowns, fruits, bunnies, seasonal and more. You will need to get some tips you may not normally have, but the ones you need are in the directions. I highly recommend the 24 cupcake stand Wilton makes for displaying your cupcakes. I use a 3 tiered dessert rack that is also a carousel that spins because I already have it for cakes. But there are some beautiful cupcakes that look awesome displayed on the top of any stemed goblet that has been turned upside down so the base become a litte table for the cupcake. The angel, penguin, and Christmas themes are just adorable, but there are sophisticate cupcakes too. If you buy the silicon cupcake holders you will be thrilled. Thoughful almost effortless fun for a loved ones special occassion.

Customer Review: Typical Wilton adverbook

I was a little disappointed in this book when I first got it. Since all you see on the cover is some "clown" cupcakes using the silly-feet baking cups (which I also purchased) I was expecting more uses of the silly-feet (I counted five), but it really covers whimsical cupcakes of all sorts, many of which would be suitable to make with children (easy to make).

It's really just an idea book and a catalog of Wilton products and what you can do with them. There is a helpful section called "The Perfect Cupcakes; How to bake, ice and decorate", and there are about six pages of recipes. Most cupcake instructions are from 1/8 to 1/2 page long, right next to a big, clear picture.

After getting over the "it wasn't what I expected" part of receiving this book, and seeing that my boyfriend seems rather enthusiastic about making really whimsical cupcakes and loves the silly-feet, I like this book more and more. Just don't expect anything sophisticated looking in it OR that many silly-feet ideas. If you are familiar with the typical adverbook that Wilton puts out, you shouldn't find any surprises here, and some of the recipes, which are a blend of from-a-mix and from-scratch, for the most part look very tempting.

There are six pages of really cute Halloween cupcakes, including a vampire in a coffin, and some skeletons/ghosts/tombstones.

Customer Review: Not just the drinks, but the history too

It's always a pleasure when a book exceeds your expectations, and this one was such a pleasurable surprise.

I had bought based upon a favorable review in the New York Times, but that review focused on the quality and authenticity of the recipes for tropical drinks. And, certainly, the book delivers on this.

But that's just part of the book. The rest of the book focuses on the story of how these drinks (born out of a prohibition-repeal era that was awash with rum) and their makers fueled the whole growth of Tiki Bars and eventually led to the (re-)introduction of Polynesian theming to Hawaii.

If you like light history with your dark rum, this is the book for you!

Customer Review: Useful and elegant

What else can I say? This cookbook holder does the trick and keeps the food from getting on the pages while freeing up some counter space.

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto

In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
What to eat, what not to eat, and how to think about health: a manifesto for our times

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." These simple words go to the heart of Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, the well-considered answers he provides to the questions posed in the bestselling The Omnivore's Dilemma.

Humans used to know how to eat well, Pollan argues. But the balanced dietary lessons that were once passed down through generations have been confused, complicated, and distorted by food industry marketers, nutritional scientists, and journalists-all of whom have much to gain from our dietary confusion. As a result, we face today a complex culinary landscape dense with bad advice and foods that are not "real." These "edible foodlike substances" are often packaged with labels bearing health claims that are typically false or misleading. Indeed, real food is fast disappearing from the marketplace, to be replaced by "nutrients," and plain old eating by an obsession with nutrition that is, paradoxically, ruining our health, not to mention our meals. Michael Pollan's sensible and decidedly counterintuitive advice is: "Don't eat anything that your great-great grandmother would not recognize as food."

Writing In Defense of Food, and affirming the joy of eating, Pollan suggests that if we would pay more for better, well-grown food, but buy less of it, we'll benefit ourselves, our communities, and the environment at large. Taking a clear-eyed look at what science does and does not know about the links between diet and health, he proposes a new way to think about the question of what to eat that is informed by ecology and tradition rather than by the prevailing nutrient-by-nutrient approach.

In Defense of Food reminds us that, despite the daunting dietary landscape Americans confront in the modern supermarket, the solutions to the current omnivore's dilemma can be found all around us.

In looking toward traditional diets the world over, as well as the foods our families-and regions-historically enjoyed, we can recover a more balanced, reasonable, and pleasurable approach to food. Michael Pollan's bracing and eloquent manifesto shows us how we might start making thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives and enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy.

Customer Review: Quick read

Interesting book and the main points really can be summed up in the byline. It felt like the author hadn't distilled his thoughts at certain points, making it wordy in certain sections. Overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to a friend.

Customer Review: Read the cover. read the book.

I saw Pollan speak at a University about this book. He told us we all wasted our money because the entire contents of the book was on the cover.

He was right.

I thought this book had some interesting history and a few good, practical points about eating. It was informative, and if you liked The Omnivore's Dilemma, you'll probably enjoy this book.

One thing though. This book is short. Really short. I felt a little ripped off when I reailzed about half of the pages are just reference materials. What's in the book is an exact rehash of everything he spoke about in his 1/2 hour lecture.

I know content is king, and this book's content was excellent. However, it's clear he didn't have much to say and only wrote this to either fulfill a contract or fill his bank account. More likely the former.
